Oklahoma City Police released body camera footage on Monday from the May 2019 arrest of 42-year-old Derrick “Ollie” Scott which ended with his death.
The video was released following demands by the Oklahoma City chapter of Black Lives Matter after a massive protest against police killings.
Officers found Scott as they responded to a 911 caller’s claim that a black man was arguing with someone and brandished a gun.
In the video, officers ask Scott if he has any weapons. Scott says he doesn’t. Officers order him to turn around as they approach but Scott runs away.
The police tackle Scott and spend several minutes trying to restrain him. One officer can be seen straddling Scott’s back at multiple points. They repeatedly order him to put his hands behind his back.
Scott told the officers he couldn’t breathe multiple times. Shortly after officers handcuffed Scott, they pulled a gun from his clothes. They later rolled him to his side and rubbed his chest.
Scott appears lethargic and seems to fade in and out of consciousness. Police called EMTs to help, but Scott resists as he is loaded into a vehicle. At the end of the video, a woman tells police that he coded. Scott was pronounced dead at the hospital.
According to an autopsy report by the state medical examiner’s office, Scott’s cause of death is unknown.
