The Oklahoma State Senate unanimously passed a bill last week that would increase apprenticeship opportunities to more high school students.
Senate Bill 619 expands the Apprenticeships, Internships and Mentorships Act of 2016 to include sophomores 16 years of age or older.
Senator David Bullard (R-Durant) said his bill also addresses concerns for school districts regarding increased participation.
"So many kids go to college or enter the workforce with no idea what career they want to pursue," said Bullard. "This allows them the opportunity to put their particular skills and knowledge to work in different areas while also pursing their passions to find the best career for them."
Bullard said the program gives students hands-on experience in various fields helping them make better informed decisions about their future. He said it also helps them know what licensing, training or higher education they need to pursue their chosen career.
The measure now heads to the House for consideration.
