Last week, the Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision that the Muscogee (Creek) Nation still has criminal jurisdiction over Eastern Oklahoma, land that was designated to them through treaties in the 1800s.
While the decision in McGirt v. Oklahoma does not grant land ownership back to the tribal nation, the ruling could potentially be the most significant decision the court has ever made on Federal Indian law.
