Officials Remind Residents That All Oklahoma City Public Playgrounds Are Closed

Jenny Stanford / KOSU
A sign tells visitors that the Mesta Park playground and all playgrounds in Oklahoma City, Okla. are currently closed.

OKC Parks have closed many of their amenities —including all playgrounds, sports courts and other hard-surfaced equipment.

Stacey Hamm with OKC Parks says since the closings, they’ve received reports of parents and children ignoring closed signs. She says the closures are to keep people more protected during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Please stay off any playgrounds or any other equipment and amenities inside city parks,” Hamm said.

She says some hard-surfaces — like outdoor shelters and picnic tables — do not have signage, but they are stressing not to congregate around them. But, the city trail system is still open. Hamm also says they are asking people to socially distance in open green spaces and avoid groups of 10 or more people.

Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt’s ‘Shelter in Place’ order has been extended to April 30. Oklahoma County has the most confirmed positive cases of COVID-19, followed by Tulsa and Cleveland counties.
