The annual Prague Kolache Festival celebrates this Oklahoma town's Czech heritage with polka music, dancing, food, Czech costumes, a parade and much more. This exciting celebration full of free entertainment attracts around 15,000 people the first Saturday in May.
Kolaches are baked months in advance to prepare for the festival. It is estimated that some 50,000 kolaches are consumed by residents and visitors alike during the festivities. A kolache is a sweet bread filled with items like cherries, poppy seeds and apricots. A contest to determine the best homemade kolaches, bread and wine is held in conjunction with the festival.
Activities kick off at 9am with a costume contest followed by Prague Czech Folk Dancers and the opening ceremony. Entertainment continues throughout the day with live music at the grandstand. At 11am, one of Oklahoma's largest parades starts at 7th Street on Hwy 99 and makes its way through downtown Prague ending at the grandstand at the city park on Highway 62. Residents dressed in colorful Czech costumes can be seen along the parade route with glimmering sequins, beads and rhinestones. Floats, bands, horses, clowns and more make up the two-hour parade.
Free entertainment ranging from singers, dancers, and polka bands are guaranteed to please the curiosity of all. The Prague Fire Department will host a Firemen's Combat Challenge for everyone to enjoy watching. A polka band will play at the City Park gazebo, where guests will also find an arts and craft show featuring jewelry, face painting, wood art, ceramics, yard art and clothing. Guests can also have a blast at the wine booths, carnival, car show and beer garden on the premises.
Visitors to the Prague Kolache Festival can try their favorite flavor of kolache and other ethnic foods such as Indian tacos, roasted corn on the cob and funnel cakes will also be available at 25 food booths. The Czech Beseda Dance will be performed at 5pm followed by the royalty crowning at 6pm. Don't miss the Polka street dance from 7-10pm followed by an exciting fireworks display. Attend the Fried Onion Burger Day Festival in downtown El Reno to witness the cooking of the world's largest fried onion hamburger, weighing over 850 lbs. This annual event is a tribute to the popular fried onion hamburgers that have been cooked daily in diners and cafes throughout El Reno since the early 1900s.
An all-American event, the El Reno Fried Onion Burger Day Festival traces its origins back to Ross Davis, who owned and operated the Hamburger Inn on Route 66 in downtown El Reno. During the Depression, when onions were cheap but meat was expensive, Davis began adding shredded onion to five-cent meat patties in order to make the burgers look bigger. What resulted on the grill of the Hamburger Inn was a hamburger with a tremendous amount of flavor and the birth of a local tradition and delicacy.
In celebration of El Reno's unique slice of Americana, it was decided that the city's Fried Onion Burger Day Festival would revolve around the cooking of the world's largest fried onion hamburger. Come and watch as a 12-ft convection oven and a 10-ft circular grill cooks, rises, flips and lowers 250 lbs. of beef, 150 lbs. of onion and 350 lbs. of bun layered with mustard and pickles. Watch in amazement as this tasty behemoth is created, then stick around to help eat the massive burger. Volunteers will be on hand to divide the giant burger into individual portions and pass them out to hungry festival-goers for free.
This El Reno festival, which attracts over 20,000 visitors each year, also includes games, live entertainment and more. Browse rows of classic cars in the festival's car and motorcycle show, or enjoy shopping for handmade goods and merchandise in a wide variety of craft and vendor booths. Clowns and magicians will be on hand to entertain the kids, while a burger eating contest invites participants to chow down on delicious onion burgers in the hopes of claiming the top prize.
Multiple Voices is the first public artwork in the United States by Eva Schlegel, the Austria-based artist known for engineering steel and mirrors into spectacular, architectonic sculptures. Working with materials similar to the arts center’s new building, Schlegel created a series of polished and translucent surfaces that catch and reflect light and parts of the surrounding environment, encouraging visitors to gather, play and learn. Poems by Steve Bellin-Oka, Kimberly Blaeser and Joy Harjo appear in blurred form on glass panels, registering each poem as part of the sculpture, but rendered cryptic to the viewer.
