The May 2019 edition features a fresh lineup of artists celebrating their roots. NPR member stations compiled a list of best songs that have been playing on repeat on public radio stations around the country including sounds of the Appalachian mountainside from Ani DiFranco, a re-imagining of low country music from the Carolina's by Rhiannon Giddens and other hidden gems that are perfect for the summer.
Norman Music Festival starts on Thursday and it's time to start planning your schedule for each day of the fest! Every day of this free festival has so many great artists I'm sure you want to see them all like we do. Unfortunately it's not possible to see every single act, but here are our opinions on the ten acts that are absolute must-sees at Norman Music Festival this year.
Skating Polly may have moved onto national fame and acclaim, but they will never forget their Oklahoma roots. The band said they are "literally so stoked for Norman Music Festival" and that the festival "will always remain one of (their) favorite places to play." The band chats with our music intern, Kyra Bruce, about their origins in Oklahoma, dealing with "Girl Band Geeks", and playing music with their family.
What a year for music. Don’t believe me? Then just look at the diversity of all the 2018 year-end Best Of’s. Taking a look at my list makes my heart swell & reminds me of why I still do what I do. The music, man - the music! Like Chelsey Cope at her very best or Skating Polly carving their names on my heart or Broncho when they toured with Billy Idol (I’m still jealous).
Skating Polly's music has skittered back and forth along the genre spectrum between alt-rock and what it calls "ugly pop." The band's lead single for The Make It All Show, "Queen for a Day," skews towards rock as it drips with punk sensibilities: from Kelli Mayo's snarling vocal performance to the simple and stripped down verses leading into the thrashing of guitars on the chorus.
On the Oklahoma Rock Show, we comb through dozens of songs every week. They're country and folk, rock and punk, hip-hop and EDM, and everything in between. Below, you'll find 10 songs we've really been enjoying over the past month or so.
