The Minnesota congresswoman held on in Tuesday's primary. Omar's race gained significant attention after losses by other members of the progressive group of House lawmakers known as the "Squad."

Republicans have cited the Minnesota Democrat's past controversial comments about Israel. Omar, who herself has faced anti-Muslim bigotry since taking office, called the move "purely partisan."

Speaker Kevin McCarthy blocked two Democrats from serving on a key House panel, arguing it is in the interest of national security. Dems say the move is nothing more than political retribution.

The contentious phone call between Reps. Lauren Boebert and Ilhan Omar likely means the controversy will continue.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Rep. Ilhan Omar introduced the bill calling for Prince to posthumously receive the award. The Congressional Gold Medal has been awarded to only 163 people since 1776.

The House speaker said she had already made her opinion known to Vice President Pence, and if he and the Cabinet don't act, "Congress may be prepared to move forward with impeachment."

"We can't allow him to remain in office, it's a matter of preserving our Republic and we need to fulfill our oath," wrote the Minnesota Democrat, as Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol.

The first-term progressive has a well-funded challenger. Also Tuesday there are two runoffs in Georgia with controversial conservative candidates.

The two progressive congresswomen are part of "the squad" — a quartet of first-term Democratic women of color who are popular with the party's base but who are frequent targets of Democrats and Trump.

"We are going to continue to be a nightmare to this president," she said into a megaphone, "because his policies are a nightmare to us. We are not deterred, we are not frightened, we are ready."
