State Senate Candidate Claims OSBI Violated Her Rights When Seizing Her Phone

State Senate candidate and former Norman City Councilmember Alex Scott says state investigators looking into her neighbor's rape violated Scott's rights when Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agents seized her phone.

Late last month, Scott’s duplex neighbor told police a strange man broke into her home and raped her.

The attack happened shortly after Scott alleges disgruntled Norman police officers shared her personal information, including her address, online. Scott believes she was the intended target of the attack.

Scott's information was shared after she pushed for cuts to the Norman Police Department’s budget.

The phone OSBI agents took holds voicemail messages left for Scott that she has called “crazy.”

She says she intended to give the messages to OSBI investigators, but when the agency asked her to turn over the entire phone she refused.

She says an agent served her with a search warrant and took the phone from her.

An OSBI spokesperson said in a statement they are looking for any information that could point to or eliminate suspects in the rape investigation.

Scott won the Democratic nomination for state Senate District 15 last week. She will face incumbent Republican Rob Standridge on November 3.

Quinton Chandler worked at StateImpact Oklahoma from January 2018 to August 2021, focusing on criminal justice reporting.
