The Oklahoma Department of Education has advised districts to make changes to grading. That will reduce stress on students forced to take learning home because of the novel coronavirus.
Generally, the grades students had before spring break will serve as a baseline. They are then graded for participation and given chances to improve, but letter grades can't go down.
The policy is being adopted by districts in every corner of the state. Miami Public Schools Superintendent Jeremy Hogan says it’s important to extend grace to students so they can learn without pressure.
"We want to continue the educational process but not be punitive to kids," Hogan said.
Hogan says every superintendent he's talked to is taking similar measures. Teachers in Miami are already laying out extra credit opportunities for their students.
