On Thursday, the Oklahoma Education Association and a smattering of public school advocates brought forth a list of demands for the state to deliver schools before reopening in the fall.
OEA's demands include requiring masks in schools, providing schools with cleaning supplies and personal protective equipment and finding ways to address the number of students in buildings to allow social distancing.
The organization’s president, Alicia Priest, says the state is foisting decisions down onto individual school districts and not taking enough action across Oklahoma to ensure teacher and student safety.
"We are not willing to risk the lives of our students and staff and come to schools when they are not safe," Priest said.
Priest says that if schools can’t operate safely then classrooms should move online for the time being.
