Oklahoma City Archbishop Paul Coakley announced on Thursday that masks, shields or face coverings are required to be worn at all public Masses and church gatherings in the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City.
In a letter to parishioners, Coakley said all priests, deacons, parishioners, church staff and volunteers must wear face coverings beginning this Saturday. He cautioned that it was a temporary and he will continue to monitor the crisis and adjust restrictions when necessary.
While attending Sunday Mass is an obligation for Catholics, Coakley has granted a general dispensation from the obligation. For those not comfortable attending Mass in person, he encourages them to watch on livestream.
Calling it a small act of charity, Coakley asked parishioners to be vigilant in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by washing their hands, social distancing and not attending Mass or church-related functions if they are sick.
The Archdiocese of Oklahoma City is comprised of 107 parishes encompassing two-thirds of the state.
