This is No Cover, a production of KOSU and Oklahoma State University and hosted by Matthew Viriyapah. On this episode is Maddie Razook, an Oklahoma City singer-songwriter who specializes in piano synth music.
Drawing from entries in her journal, Maddie Razook's album Archive, came out in December 2019. With every instrument played by her on the album and every performance done solo with just her synth, Maddie talks about the difficulties of creating something personal.
On her synth
I just play on a Roland Juno and it has a built in drum machine. And I pretty much have it set on one thing that I really like — just sort of an electronic piano sound.
My setup is so minimal. It felt pretty good immediately when I started playing it. It’s like me and my Juno against the world.
It is interesting to me being around so many people who are so are into gear, and like just pedals and all these different things. And I wouldn’t say I was a super knowledgeable gear person. But I like what I like and I know how to use the few things I have.
On her album Archive
I knew it was going to be ten tracks unless I decided to take anything away, but we had finished everything and then I kind of left it. Didn’t listen to it at all. Didn’t do anything to it. I just needed to leave it and not think about it, because it had been something that I had spent so much time on.
Then I went back through and listened to all of the tracks. And I was hearing them like they weren’t mine. When you’re in it and when you’re doing it, it’s hard to hear that it’s good.
I was able to listen to it after not working on it for a bit and I appreciate it for what it was. And I felt this excitement that was like ‘Oh my gosh, I get to share this with people if I choose to.’
There were maybe some moments in there when I was like I’m never going to put this out. I feel like probably every solo artist has felt this way when you can’t hide behind like a band or there’s no one else in it with you really. Whether it’s good or bad, this is me.
