On Friday, the Recording Academy announced its nominees for the Grammy Awards, which will be held on Feb. 10.

Kendrick Lamar, who helmed the Black Panther soundtrack, leads this year's field with eight nominations; Americana artist Brandi Carlile surprised with six nominations, including in the categories of album and record of the year. Country artist Kacey Musgraves earned four nominations, for album and country album of the year. Previous Grammy favorite Taylor Swift was shut out from all categories except best pop vocal Album for reputation.

This year, for the first time, in the four main categories — album of the year, record of the year, song of the year (a songwriting award), and best new artist — the number of nominees has expanded to eight from five. Female artists became the majority of nominees in the album of the year, song of the year and best new artist fields.

This past February, the Grammy Awards show was watched closely to see whether it had the capacity to re-balance itself atop a shifting cultural and political bedrock. The answer was: not yet; only one woman received a major award during the broadcast. The lack of parity extended an embarrassing 6-year stretch for the Academy, wherein women accounted for just 9.3 percent of all nominations.

While the 2019 nominees list offers some hope, next year's winners haven't been determined. From Dec. 13 through Jan. 9, the Academy will undertake its final round of voting on who will take home next year's golden gramophones. We'll find out on Feb. 10 whether all the work the Recording Academy put into initiatives intended to yank it toward the future (an existential priority, by some measures) were enough. Less than a month after last year's ceremony, the Recording Academy having established a task force led by Time's Up leader Tina Tchen and implemented changes intended to diversify its membership.
