Muscogee (Creek) Citizen Joy Harjo has been appointed to a third term as the U.S. Poet Laureate.
First appointed as U.S. Poet Laureate in 2019, she's the second poet to serve this many terms. The first was Robert Pinsky in 1997.
Upon her first appointment in 2019, Harjo expressed to PBS NewsHour what it meant for Indigenous people.
“Some of us are astronauts. Some of us are really good at fixing cars,” Harjo said. “But we’re human beings. And some of us write poetry … it makes a doorway of hope.”
Harjo's third term will begin in September of 2021.
