Group Begins Awareness on Medicaid Expansion

A group wanting a ballot measure to expand Medicaid is launching a new campaign to raise awareness.

Oklahomans Decide Healthcare is working to let people know the importance of its initiative petition to put Medicaid expansion on the ballot in November of 2020.

Spokesperson Amber England says our state is currently giving money away to the 36 states already under the Medicaid expansion program.

“We could bring over a billion dollars home every year. This is money we’re already paying in that we need to be spending in our local community that will help create jobs and provide healthcare to almost 200,000 Oklahomans.”

She says this would also help rural areas in our state where eight hospitals have filed for bankruptcy and six have closed their doors since 2016.

The ballot initiative faces a legal challenge from a conservative think-tank with oral arguments before the state Supreme Court coming up this Tuesday, June 18th.

If approved, the group will have 90 days to gather 178,000 signatures to get the measure before voters.
