COVID-19 Pandemic Affecting Independence Day Celebrations In Oklahoma

Independence Day celebrations in Oklahoma will be different this year due to COVID-19.

Stillwater's Boomer Blast has been postponed, with the city exploring options to hold the fireworks show later this year.

“We know it’s a disappointment; however, this decision was made out of concern for our community,” Special Events Coordinator Stephanie Kinder said in a written statement.

Tulsa's River Parks Authority has made a similar decision to postpone Freedom Fest until Labor Day. Matt Meyer, executive director of River Parks, told the Tulsa World it's impossible to know if they could have the large crowds they are used to this July.

"This is the sort of thing you can’t wait until July 3 to make the decision," Meyer said. "We have got a lot of logistics involved and sponsors involved and that sort of thing."

Edmond's multi-day celebration LibertyFest has been canceled altogether for 2020. Organizers cited current social distancing guidelines and the summer closure of the University of Central Oklahoma campus as being some of the reasons for canceling the event.

“We are planning one of the best fireworks shows ever for 2021”, Bob Meinders, LibertyFest Fireworks Chair, said in a statement.

But, some Fourth of July celebrations are moving forward.

Yukon will hold its three-day Freedom Fest celebration, complete with fireworks, live music and a car show. An announcement states "things will look different this year," but does not detail what precautions or restrictions will be in place.

Bixby will also proceed with their Freedom Celebration, with restrictions. Spectators will be allowed to sit in the park or their cars, but there will be no kids zone, stage program or firefighter challenge.
