The Choctaw Nation is now powering some of its homes with solar energy.
OG&E started construction of two solar energy farms in Southeastern Oklahoma in February of this year. This week, they were online and fully operational for 4,600 customers.
One of the solar farms is in Durant, near the Choctaw Nation's headquarters. The Choctaw Nation partnered with OG&E to purchase solar power that will get distributed to 58 accounts throughout the area.
Stan Self, the director of the Choctaw Nation Utility Authority, said households are already saving money by using solar power.
"We're very concerned about our Mother Earth," Self said. "We want to give back to communities and Chief Batton and our council have been very supportive of our efforts to reduce our energy consumption."
Self said the Choctaw Nation is looking for more opportunities to expand the solar farm.
