Oklahomans who want to register to vote in the Presidential Preferential Primary on March 3rd—or Super Tuesday—must submit their application in person or have it postmarked by this Friday, February 7th.
Paul Ziriax is the secretary of the Oklahoma State Election Board. He says voters can expect the same processes in the primaries – where people vote with their registered party. However, Oklahoma Democrats have allowed Independent voters the option to vote in their primaries again this year.
Ziriax says while Oklahoma Libertarians will not have a presidential primary pick to vote for, there are local elections to keep in mind on March 3rd.
He also recommends for registered voters to double check their information.
“Confirm your voter registration, make sure your voter registration has your current address - make sure you know where your polling place is, that it hasn’t changed since the last time you voted,” Ziriax said.
Voter registration applications can be found on their website at elections.ok.gov.You can also register at locations like county election boards or tag agencies.
Absentee ballots for Super Tuesday elections also have to be requested by 5 p.m. on February 26.
The Official 2020 Voter Registration Statistics from the state election board was released on January 16.
The data shows the number of registered Independent and Republican voters continues to rise. Republicans hold the majority of registered voters at 48.3% in Oklahoma. Democrats, who are still the second largest party in the state, hold a 35.3% stake which is down by 2.9%—or nearly 32,000 people—since 2018.
Democrats were also once the largest party in Oklahoma, but were passed by Republicans in January 2015.
Oklahoma Libertarians now have more than double their number of registered voters in January 2018. This is the first time in state history that the Libertarian Party, which gained recognition in 2016, has over 11,000 registered voters.
