Focus: Black Oklahoma reporter and producer Devin Williams is one of 16 journalists chosen for AIR's 2021 class of New Voices.
A Texas native, Williams moved to the Tulsa area in 2013. He has worked with Focus: Black Oklahoma and Tulsa Talks, reporting on homelessness in Tulsa, Black entrepreneurs in Bartlesville, Blackness in pop culture and the Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial. Williams also took part in NPR's Next Generation Radio earlier this year.
Since 2009, New Voices has paired industry leaders with underrepresented and early-career media makers to connect, reflect and engage on their creative journeys.
Under the theme is "(Re)defining Our Why: Collectively Envisioning the Future of Audio," this year's project prioritizes underrepresented narratives and talent.
Each New Voices scholar will receive a $1,000 stipend, along with a dedicated mentor, ongoing support, resources and networking opportunities. The hope is that each of these scholars have the resources, support and access to opportunity needed to stay the course of their respective creative paths.
The five-month program lasts from August to December 2021.
Focus: Black Oklahoma airs monthly on KOSU and is available wherever you get your podcasts.
