New Voices, More Levity: Changes To KOSU Program Schedule

Beginning Saturday, October 3, KOSU will bring listeners a revised on-air schedule. This includes the addition of several new weekend shows and new times for several others.

Weekday Mornings

While most of KOSU's weekday schedule will remain intact, there will be one change in the lineup. The midday talk show On Point is scaling back its operation from two hours to one, its distributors WBUR and NPR announced in July.

To fill that lost hour, KOSU will extend Morning Edition by one additional hour. Since the beginning of the pandemic, many of us have been starting our days later. The extension of Morning Edition will allow listeners some extra time to catch public radio's most popular program. The show will now air from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. every weekday.

Weekend Lineup

American Public Media, which distributes Live From Here, announced in June that the show would end production and distribution. This created a big hole in KOSU's Saturday afternoon schedule and began the process of looking at a schedule revamp.

Also leaving KOSU's airwaves are Sound Opinions and Travel with Rick Steves. Folk Alley will be reduced from two hours to one hour and repeat airings will end of This American Life and Milk Street Radio.

Joining the new schedule will be It's Been A Minute, Hidden Brain, Latino USA, All Songs Considered and Alt.Latino. Weekend All Things Considered will also rejoin the lineup on Saturday and Sunday, and a repeat of Ask Me Another will be added on Sunday afternoons.

Listeners will also notice many of the weekend shows have new time slots. You can view the new schedule below.

A note from Rachel Hubbard, KOSU's Executive Director

As people's schedules continue to change, we want to cater to what you need right now, which is why we’re extending Morning Edition by one hour on weekdays. We have also heard two messages loud and clear. We understand you want programming that caters to more diverse audiences and you want more levity on the weekends. That’s why we’re excited to bring shows like Latino USA and It’s Been a Minute to the KOSU schedule and offer another opportunity to hear Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me and Ask Me Another.

In our on-air schedule and what we’re doing in the digital space, our goal is to create a service that reflects the vibrancy and diversity of Oklahoma.

This is the first substantial update to KOSU's weekend schedule in three years. We know change is hard and we do not take these changes lightly. We hope you'll listen and give the new lineup a chance, then — as always — we welcome your feedback.

KOSU Broadcast Schedule beginning October 3, 2020

The new schedule goes into effect beginning Saturday, October 3.

INFORMATION ON NEWLY ADDED PROGRAMS

It's Been A Minute with Sam Sanders is a weekly one-hour engaging conversation -- a timely and topical look back at the week's news, with pop culture features and interviews. Each week, Sam interviews people in the culture who deserve your attention and talks about the news with other journalists. Join Sam as he makes sense of the world through conversation.

Hidden Brain helps curious people understand the world – and themselves. Using science and storytelling, the show reveals the unconscious patterns that drive human behavior, and the biases that shape our choices. Host Shankar Vedantam links research from psychology and neurobiology with findings from economics, anthropology, and sociology, among other fields.

Latino USA provides a platform for Latino voices and perspectives in the radio news landscape. Hosted by Maria Hinojosa, the program specializes in news, culture and storytelling that creates a space where Latino Americans hear their experiences reflected, and where non-Latinos can join the conversations happening in Latino communities.

All Songs Considered is NPR's guide to discovering new music below the radar. Host Bob Boilen and producer Robin Hilton go through hundreds of new CDs to find music that's worth getting excited about, whether it's the latest Swedish pop band, a hip hop artist going ambient, or a singer-songwriter with a twisted new take on love.

Alt.Latinointroduces listeners to new alternative Latinx music, including diverse genres such as cumbia, Mexican garage rock, Panamanian rap, heavy metal mariachi and many more boundary-blurring sounds from around the world. Hosted by Felix Contreras, the show also features interviews and insightful conversation about Latinx arts and culture.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

Why are you canceling Live From Here?

We are not canceling Live From Here. American Public Media, the show's distributor, ended production in June and KOSU has aired re-runs since. The show will not be distributed to stations by mid-September.

Why is On Point not airing at 9 a.m.?

On Point is scaling back in October, moving from two hours daily to just one hour. Filling the 10 a.m. hour would have necessitated a much larger change in our weekday schedule, due to a lack of mid-day programs available. So, we extended Morning Edition by one hour and kept On Point at 10 a.m. The rest of the weekday lineup is unaffected.
