Lindsey Cox's top 5 new songs of 2024

Peel Dream Magazine
Peel Dream Magazine

Lindsey Cox, host of Lindsey's Lounge, shares her top five new songs of 2024.

5. Being Dead - "Firefighters"

I’m all about the crunchy, grungy tones in this track, paired with those dreamy Mamas and Papas-style harmonies. The song’s sudden stops and dynamic shifts keep me on my toes. Being Dead has such a knack for creating space for different tonal atmospheres, so I never get bored no matter how many times I listen.

4. Peel Dream Magazine - "Oblast"

The squishy, textured sound of this one really pulls me in, and I’m a sucker for a good time-signature switch-up. There’s definitely some Sufjan Stevens influence here, which makes me love it even more. This song feels like a jubilant parade winding its way into a golden sunset.

3. Busted Head Racket - "Need For Speed"

This track is the ultimate “egg punk” song (as the algorithm calls it these days), full of lo-fi synths, satirical lyrics, and a DIY recording style that I’m here for all day.

2. Diode - "Diode"

This is the 3rd track off of their album 2. The rising, buzzy synths in this song hit me right in the gut, especially when they come back with full force later on. Diode makes me want to dance and throw things at the same time. The shouty vocals and the punk energy in their lyrics—particularly the themes of class consciousness—are electric. If their recorded tracks are this powerful, I can’t even imagine how explosive their live shows must be.

1. @ - "Are You There God? It’s Me, @"

This song feels like ethereal light breaking through the clouds. The Beach Boys-style harmonies tickle my affinity for choral arrangements, and the glitchy shift into the upbeat section with flute is pure magic. @ may be one of the hardest bands to search for online, but trust me, they’re worth the hunt.
