The Black Angels: Live From The Triple Door

Spotlight: The Black Angels, Performing 'Telephone'

KEXP has been championing The Black Angels for so long, we think of them as family. In fact, when you visit the KEXP offices, you're greeted by an enormous mounted steer skull that the Austin, Texas, band autographed and shipped to us.

So we were especially excited to introduce The Black Angels to the rest of the KEXP family: our listeners. We had the band play one of our special VIP Club Concerts, an exclusive event just for donors.

The group tore the roof off and let its razor-blade leads and wailing organ-synth rain down. Leader Alex Maas barked with a ferociousness that sunk into the skin. The music slunk through the crowd like an iridescent snake wrapping itself around each and every fan in the crowd, rattling its tail and hissing a slew of bittersweet, psychedelic nothings. In the process, The Black Angels transported all of us back to the '60s, for just a little while.
