The Morning Benders' 2008 debut, Talking Through Tin Cans, was named the best indie/alternative album of that year by iTunes, and the band's three members -- Chris Chu, Julian Harmon and Tim Or -- subsequently toured with a variety of well-known acts, including Grizzly Bear, The Kooks, Death Cab for Cutie, Ra Ra Riot, MGMT, Yeasayer, and The Submarines.
The California group's latest record, Big Echo, came out in March. Co-produced by Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor, the disc assembles a wall of sound using a plethora of instruments and beautifully layered vocals. There's no question that Grizzly Bear's mixing played an influential part in the construction of Big Echo, and that's a good thing. Here, the band re-creates its songs live in a studio session at WXPN's World Cafe.
