Elvis Costello: Steadfast Icon

For more than 30 years, Elvis Costello has been a musical innovator. His work has aged well, too; his star has lost none of its luster in the new millennium.

In the late '70s, Costello resided at the forefront of underground music, combining a punk sensibility with rock artistry. Before long, he was a full-fledged icon. This Year's Model, from 1978, is considered to be his greatest work, earning rave reviews.

Last month saw the release of Costello's latest album, Secret, Profane & Sugarcane. The disc retains much of Costello's signature salty attitude, and focuses on an assortment of fascinating characters. Many of his songs, such as "Down Among the Wines and Spirits," have a country feel, relying heavily on acoustic guitar and traditional folk instruments.
