East London's Dark Captain Light Captain is preparing to release its full-length debut, Miracle Kicker, later this month, but in the meantime listeners can get a taste of the band's whispy, experimental folk style with the four-song Circles EP. And despite being only 16 minutes in length, Dark Captain Light Captain's release is an absorbing one.
The Circles EP closes with today's featured song, "Walls." It's a fragile piece, with gently floating vocals and the soft, finger-picking of an acoustic guitar. Barely audible electronic blips shimmer in the background, adding a subtle texture to a song which the band notes on its Web site will not be included in the upcoming Miracle Kicker.
Also not to be included on Dark Captain Light Captain's full-length release is the slightly peppier "They Be Underwater," which again includes mellow guitar with accompanying electronic accents, but also throws in quirky treats like the bubbling sound of a stream and chirping birds. There's a charming and graceful quality about these British newcomers, and thankfully it won't be long before Miracle Kicker is revealed – at least in the UK – on October 27.
