KOSU statehouse reporter Lionel Ramos is among 20 journalists selected to participate in the National Press Foundation’s Widening the Pipeline Fellowship.

According to the National Press Foundation, “Widening the Pipeline was established to address the ongoing challenge of diversifying American newsrooms. Journalists of color comprise less than 25% of newsroom staff, and their percentage in leadership roles is even smaller.”

Ramos will travel to Washington for an in-person training session and attend online virtual sessions throughout the year. He will also be matched with journalism mentors who will advise him throughout the fellowship program.

Ramos has been covering state government at KOSU since January 2024, writing about immigration, the nation’s first nonbinary lawmaker and more. Prior to that, he was a Report for America Corps member at Oklahoma Watch. His current position is funded through a Corporation for Public Broadcasting grant, which aims to strengthen public media state government reporting, and his reporting is shared with public media newsrooms across the state.
