The Scissortail Park will be the newest project to join the MAPS 3 series of renovations.
Community leaders announced the name Thursday at a groundbreaking ceremony.
Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett says the 70-acre park will become a source of pride for the city.
“I think more than another MAPS project before or after, the citizens of Oklahoma City are going to enjoy watching this one grow and deliver its destiny,” Cornett said. “There are too many places to view the construction for people to ignore and show up at the ribbon-cutting and say, ‘wow, I didn’t see that coming.’”
The $132 million project is funded through a one-cent sales tax that began in April 2010 and will end this December. It is expected to fully fund eight projects, including the park, a streetcar system and a downtown convention center.
The park will be divided into two sections just south of Bricktown. The area north of Interstate 40 is expected to be completed in 2019, with the southern portion scheduled to be done in 2021.
“I want you to be able to look back upon this day as a day Oklahoma City stepped up and fulfilled a lot of the promises we made to the voters, and a lot of promises we made to people who are no longer with us,” Cornett said.
Connie Tate is already making plans to take advantage of the park’s lake, walking trails, and gardens.
“I’m even thinking about relocating,” she said. “I live in northwest Oklahoma City and I’m thinking about moving down here.”
