Writer Gideon Defoe wrote a pirate book to impress the girl of his dreams. It didn't work, but his writing took off.
Writer Gideon Defoe wrote a pirate book to impress the girl of his dreams. It didn't work, but his writing took off.

Writer Gideon Defoe says he knew instinctively that his career in minimum-wage temp jobs wouldn't impress the girl of his dreams. So he told her he was writing a book, and the product of this fevered inspiration was the saga of a bunch of wacky buccaneers called The Pirates!: In an Adventure with Scientists.

Defoe wrote a sequel, and the series is a sensation in Britain and has gathered an audience in America as well. Recently the books have been optioned for a movie version.
