McCall Tells Gentrification Tale in 'Them'

"Gentrification" is one of those words that sets some people's teeth on edge. Does it mean improving a neighborhood or displacing long-time residents?

Journalist and professor Nathan McCall takes on the topic in novel form and with a novel twist in Them.

He tells the story of a 40-year-old black man who tries to buy the home he rented in Atlanta's Old Fourth Ward, the birthplace of Martin Luther King, Jr.

But the neighborhood is beset by rising housing prices and clashes between new and old residents.
